‘You can make a wish come true, if you’re determined . . .’
Gone are the days when Ginger was an outsider, always on the fringes of friendship. She’s swapped puppy fat and pigtails for make-up and hair straighteners and never looked back – until now. Ginger and Shannon are best mates, but when they befriend lonely Emily, everything changes. Even the saxophone-playing boy in the trilby hat can’t help – he’s part of the problem. Are Ginger and Shannon drifting apart or can they stay best friends forever?
1 of my fave books
OMG Its sii JUICYYY Thanks for this very interesting book! 1 of my favs!
I have just read gingernaps, it is sooooooo good and I really reccomend it!
I first read this book close to its release, around 2009. I was just starting high school and was desperate for a fresh start, after being bullied in primary school.
I could definitely relate to Ginger’s struggle – feeling like I might have to abandon my values and completely change myself in order to survive, socially. This book, and others like it, helped me feel less alone. It validated my 12 year old self’s problems, which – although they seem petty now – felt almost insurmountable at the time.
I’m now 22 years old, visiting my parents’ house for Christmas. I dug up Ginger Snaps in my old childhood bedroom and read the whole thing in one night. Though I’m at a completely different place in life, by all intents and purposes considered an adult, this book returned me to my pre-teen and teenage years.
The scene where Ginger describes being able to almost catch a glimpse of her younger, bullied and timid self whenever she looks in the mirror for too long felt particularly poignant. I think most adults could benefit from revisiting the stories that helped them through adolescence. I’m glad books like this exist, to reassure kids that sticking up for what feels right ultimately feels way better than putting on a mask to fit in.
Thank you for this excellent story, Cathy. I’m sure I’ll revisit it many more times. Also – I still love Sam Taylor after all these years! One of the first “manic pixie dream boys” I ever encountered in fiction, but with hidden depth; and he’s still cute.
Wow… this feedback means the world, R! Thank you so much. Keep on being awesome and thanks so much for taking the time to get in touch! xx
