After seeing Cathy at the ilkley literature festival as a treat for getting into my high school when i was ten, i started reading the chocolate box series a lot more in depth than i had been, and plenty other of her works too, eg. drift wood. After reading this book the only bad thing i have to say about it is this;
The blurb and trailer are misleading.
I stumbled upon the hardback at my local book shop. i don’t really by hardbacks but after i spent an hour in the shop plowing through 6 chapters, i bought it and finished it late that evening. This book is the type that you can relate to, so much so that when the sleepover came, you felt the dread Alice felt. The story itself is so cleverly written, you cant stop reading. Your drip-fed the plot, able to piece together the mis-shapen state of affairs so that you can have a good idea of what REALLY went on, but still have the urge to see if you right. I say the blurb is misleading, because it makes it out that the story will be about what goes on in her wonderland- state, which it does but its no the main focus. However, the fact the book isn’t formatted in the traditional way is refreshing, a take on a tale, yet the only resemblance is the characters, and the setting. The book itself is unique. The characters are interesting, the way that your as clueless as Alice is in her comatose state, with no knowledge of the events that led up to the accident, or who was really to blame or rather, who provoked it means your are able to get to know the characters as alice remembers them. i found myself yelling at the book at some points at the sheer foolishness of Alices ‘friends’ which, although i couldn’t stand 1 of them, I still couldnt put the book down. It was a bold move and this book deals with heavy emotions which make you stop and think. This is a situation any year 8 student could be in and it mad me cry as well as yell. I truly respect the way Cathy deals with these emotions, which is a huge step up fro the chocolate box girls. but unlike an unfortunate family situation, i know how it feels, her family is normal, school isn’t great, its a true tragedy and you wish with every visit, every conversation, she makes it out of wonderland!
I loved this book, not to quick so there are plot holes, but just enough so you can always enjoy the chapter and look forward to the next. A master piece. Well Done Cathy, i had a wonderful day reading the book-your best yet!
P.s This is a really long review, but just think about how much i loved it and broke it down to be able to type so much! id keep going, but i think this covers everything. Thanks!
This book is amazing! I could not put it down and its just amazing

Wow, I didn’t expect that in the book! It was so cool when it switched from 3rd person to Alice for every chapter, and when Lainey became so jealous of Alice, So cool!
